A dead charger, a battery drained past the point of responding, a stuck System Management Controller, a failed charging IC, or genuine damage on the logic board can all produce the exact same silence: no chime, no logo, no fan. Charger or cable, not the Mac

Flat battery, not a fault
A MacBook drained down to nothing will not always respond the instant a charger is connected; it needs a few minutes on a charger you already know works before the power button does anything. If it boots once charged but dies again the moment it is unplugged, the cell itself is worn out, and a battery replacement from RM280 is normally sorted the same day.
SMC stuck (Intel only)
On an Intel MacBook, the System Management Controller can get stuck in a state where the power button does not respond at all until a proper SMC reset clears it. M1 through M4 Macs do not carry a separate SMC, so there is nothing to reset in the same way: a full power-down followed by a normal restart covers the equivalent ground on Apple Silicon.
Charging IC on the board
When the charger's own light stays off no matter what you plug in, the fault is usually the charging IC, a board-level component that manages how power is accepted and passed to the battery, not the port itself. Power rail short on the board
A Mac that shows genuinely nothing at all, no chime, no fan, no warmth, even with a charger confirmed working, points to a short somewhere on a power rail inside the logic board. We measure those rails carefully on the bench, current deliberately capped throughout, before any logic board repair begins, which shows exactly where the board is drawing power abnormally.
Liquid corrosion, sometimes months later
Corrosion from a spill keeps spreading long after the liquid itself has dried, and a Mac that was fine for weeks can stop turning on the morning the last unaffected trace finally gives way. Stuck on the Apple logo
The screen lighting up with the Apple logo, or a folder icon blinking on and off, tells you the machine has power and is trying to start; whatever stops it going further from there sits in software or on the storage drive, not in the power circuit at all. A macOS repair sorts most of these out; where Disk Utility can't even see the drive, hold off on reinstalling and ask about data recovery instead.
Dead display, Mac still running
Fans spinning, keyboard backlight on, warmth on the underside, yet nothing shows up either on the built-in screen or a second monitor plugged in alongside it: that points to the display or the graphics circuit, not a true "won't turn on" fault, even though it looks identical from the outside. Once the diagnosis points at the logic board, the Mac moves from the counter to the bench.
