A MacBook that will not charge is rarely the simple fault it looks like from the outside. The charger, the cable, the port itself and the charging circuitry on the logic board are four separate things that can each fail on their own, and treating a board fault as a bad cable, or the other way round, wastes money without fixing anything. iPRO Ampang is an Apple Certified Independent Repair Provider in Taman Dagang, Ampang, and every charging job starts by testing all four before we say what is actually wrong.
Where the fault is the port itself, whether USB-C, Thunderbolt or MagSafe, we replace the small I/O or DC-in board it sits on, which is a separate part from the main logic board on almost every MacBook. Where the fault has reached the charging IC or the power rails feeding it, that is board-level micro-soldering work under the microscope. Charger LED stays off
The little status light on the MagSafe connector, or the equivalent indicator on a USB-C charger, never changes when you plug in. This usually means no power is reaching the circuit that should light it, which points to the port, its connector, or the charging IC behind it rather than the charger.
Charges only at an angle
The Mac charges if the cable is held or taped at a specific angle but stops the moment it is let go naturally. This is a classic sign of a port connector with a cracked solder joint or worn contacts, making and breaking contact depending on the exact position of the plug.
One USB-C port dead
On models with two or more USB-C ports, one stops charging or transferring data while the others keep working normally. Each port usually runs through its own controller circuit, so a single dead port with the rest fine points to that one port's connector or controller rather than a board-wide fault.
Charging very slowly
The battery percentage climbs far slower than it should for the charger's rated wattage, even though charging is technically happening. This can be a genuine charger or cable limitation, a port not negotiating full power delivery correctly, or a battery that is ageing and cannot accept charge as fast as it once did.
MagSafe 3 pins burnt
Visible scorch marks or discolouration on the MagSafe connector or its pins, sometimes with a burning smell, usually from repeated small electrical shorts as the connector made and broke contact under load. A burnt connector needs the DC-in board replaced, not just a clean.
"Not charging" while plugged in
macOS shows the charger connected but the battery percentage does not move, or actively drops while plugged in. This points to the charging circuit accepting the connection but failing to actually convert and deliver power to the battery, a charging IC fault rather than a port or cable problem.
Charger runs hot
The charger brick itself gets noticeably hot to the touch during normal use, more than the mild warmth that is completely normal for any charger. This can mean the charger is failing internally, or that it is compensating for resistance somewhere in the circuit it is charging into, including a fault on the Mac's side.
Damage from a third-party charger
A charger that does not properly negotiate voltage and current with the Mac can, in rare cases, send more power than the charging circuit expects and damage the port or the components behind it. We check for this specifically when a customer mentions using a non-Apple charger before the fault appeared.
Charger, cable, port or board? How we tell
We start with the parts you already own: your charger and cable are tested against a known-good Mac and a known-good charger is tested against your Mac, which isolates whether the fault travels with the charger, the cable, or stays with the machine. This takes a few minutes and rules out the cheapest possible cause before we open anything.
If the fault stays with the Mac, we check the port itself for physical damage, bent contacts or debris, then test the charging behaviour with the case open. A port that shows voltage but will not charge points further into the board, toward the charging IC and power rails, and that is where the diagnosis moves from a visual and electrical check to the same schematic-led process we use for any logic board fault.
Ports we replace versus charging ICs we repair
The USB-C, Thunderbolt or MagSafe port sits on its own small board, connected to the main logic board by a short cable or a direct connector, on almost every MacBook built since the port moved away from the original MagSafe 1 and 2 design. Where the fault is in the port itself, cracked solder, worn contacts, a bent pin, we replace that small board, which is quicker and cheaper than any work on the main board.
Where the port tests fine but charging still fails, the fault has moved to the charging IC or the power management circuitry on the main logic board, and that is repaired the same way as any other board fault: under the microscope, against Apple's own schematics, replacing only the specific component that failed.
