Data recovery covers a wider range of machines and faults than a straightforward repair, from a MacBook that has stopped powering on completely, through a failing hard drive inside an older iMac, to a folder you deleted by accident last week. What all of these have in common is that the priority is the files themselves, and the plan for getting them back depends entirely on what actually failed and how the storage in that specific Mac is built.
On Macs with storage soldered directly to the logic board, which includes every model from 2018 onward, reaching the drive means reaching the board first, so board repair and data recovery are often the same job in two stages. On older Macs with a removable SSD or hard drive, we can usually image the drive directly on the bench without opening the machine itself at all. Either way, we start with a free assessment and tell you honestly what the odds look like before any paid work begins.
Mac data recovery situations we handle
MacBook won't turn on, files inside
A MacBook that shows no sign of life, no chime, no fan, nothing on an external display, is one of the most common reasons people come to us worried about their data rather than the machine itself. We assess whether the board can be powered enough to attempt recovery before any repair work on the machine begins, since that changes the order everything happens in.
SSD not detected
A drive that does not show up in Disk Utility or Recovery Mode, on a Mac that otherwise starts up normally, points to the drive itself rather than macOS. On models with soldered storage this can look identical to a board fault from the outside, which is why we test both before telling you which one you are actually dealing with.
iMac hard drive clicking
A repeated clicking or grinding noise from an older iMac is the drive's read head failing to find its position, and it is a mechanical fault that gets worse the longer the drive keeps running. Powering the Mac off as soon as you hear it, rather than trying one more restart, meaningfully improves the odds of getting the data off intact.
Deleted files or emptied Trash
Files deleted and removed from the Trash are not immediately gone; they stay recoverable until the space they occupied gets overwritten by something else, which can happen within minutes on a drive still in active use. The single best thing you can do is stop using the Mac the moment you realise the mistake and bring it to us before anything else gets saved to that drive.
Water-damaged Mac ([liquid damage](/macbook-water-damage-repair-kl/))
A Mac that has been wet and will not turn on is usually a board fault before it is a storage fault, since corrosion from the spill affects the board first. FileVault-encrypted drive (password needed)
FileVault encrypts the entire drive, and without the password or the recovery key, the data on it is not something we, or anyone else, can decrypt. If you have the password or the recovery key Apple gave you when FileVault was turned on, recovery is straightforward once the drive itself is accessible; without either, the files stay unreadable regardless of what else is fixed.
Time Machine backup won't restore
A Time Machine backup that fails partway through a restore, or a backup drive that has developed its own fault, defeats the entire point of having a backup at the moment you actually need it. We can attempt recovery from a damaged Time Machine backup itself, separately from any recovery work on the original Mac.
Moving everything to a new Mac
Not every data job starts with a fault: plenty of customers come to us simply to move everything, files, photos, settings, off an old Mac and onto a new one, sometimes because the old machine is too slow or too old to run the current macOS at all. Soldered storage: why the board comes first
Every MacBook from 2018 onward, and every Apple Silicon Mac regardless of type, has its storage soldered directly onto the logic board rather than fitted as a separate, removable part. That single design choice is the reason a board fault on one of these Macs is also, immediately, a data problem: if the board cannot be powered, the storage attached to it cannot be read either, no matter how intact the data on it actually is.
This is why board repair comes first on soldered-storage Macs, not as an upsell but because it is the only path to the files. What we can and cannot recover
We would rather tell you honestly what is unlikely to come back than promise an outcome and fail to deliver it. Data that has already been overwritten by new files is generally gone; the space it occupied has been reused, and there is nothing left to recover from it. A FileVault-encrypted drive without its password or recovery key stays unreadable, because that is exactly what encryption is designed to guarantee, and we have no way around it.
Physically shattered NAND chips, the actual memory chips storage is built from, cracked or destroyed rather than just electrically faulty, cannot be read by any process we or anyone else has access to; once the chip itself is broken, the data on it is broken with it. Where recovery is genuinely possible, we say so and explain the odds before charging for anything beyond the free assessment; where it is not, we say that too.
Back up before it happens
The cheapest data recovery is the one you never need, and Time Machine, built into every Mac, is the simplest way to make sure of that: plug in an external drive, turn Time Machine on, and it backs up automatically from then on without you needing to think about it again. iCloud covers a narrower but still important slice, keeping Photos, Desktop and Documents synced to Apple's servers so they survive even if the Mac itself is lost or destroyed outright.
