No power, no chime

Mac mini M4 (2024)
The current mini, smaller than before and built around Thunderbolt and USB-C. Storage and memory are soldered; repairs are mostly board-level and port faults.
Mac mini M2 / M2 Pro (2023)
Same aluminium unibody as the M1, a faster board underneath. No power and no-display faults are the most common jobs we see on this generation.
Mac mini M1 (2020)
The first Apple Silicon mini, storage and memory soldered to the board. A dependable machine; when it fails it is almost always a board-level fault.
Mac mini 2018 (Intel, RAM upgradable)
The last Intel mini with a service door: RAM is user-upgradable via SO-DIMM slots, while storage is soldered on this model.
Mac mini 2014 (Intel, soldered RAM, drive upgradable)
Memory is soldered on this generation, but the drive is accessible; a storage upgrade is possible, a memory upgrade is not.
Mac mini 2010–2012 (RAM and drives upgradable)
The most upgrade-friendly minis Apple ever sold: both memory and the drive are accessible with basic tools. Still worth fixing when parts allow.
Upgradable or not: 2012 versus 2014 versus 2018 versus Apple Silicon
Whether a Mac mini can take more RAM or a bigger drive depends entirely on the year it was made, not on how it looks. The 2010 to 2012 minis take both memory and the drive with basic tools. The 2014 model solders its memory shut but keeps a serviceable drive. The 2018 Intel mini brought user-upgradable RAM back through a service door while soldering the storage. Every M-series mini, from the M1 in 2020 through the M4, has both fixed to the board with nothing to swap.
We confirm which category your mini falls into before quoting an upgrade, so you are never quoted for work that turns out to be impossible on your specific year.
Power supply and no-boot faults
A mini with no power at all is almost always a fault on the logic board's power management circuit rather than the external power brick, though we test the power input first since it is the quickest thing to rule out. A mini that powers on but never reaches a display or boot chime points further into the board, and we trace the fault under the microscope rather than guess.
These repairs need the bench, typically one to three days, because the board has to be tested cold, under load and through a full boot cycle before we're confident the fault is actually fixed and not just masked.
