A MacBook that runs hot is not automatically a MacBook with a failing board. Dust in the fans, thermal paste that has dried out after a few years, a fan starting to wear, or a process stuck running in the background can each turn up the heat and the noise, and from the outside one cause is easily mistaken for another. Our Ampang counter starts every overheating job by working out which of those it actually is, rather than reaching for the most expensive explanation first.
Most of what causes a MacBook to overheat is cleaning, not repair: clearing the dust, refreshing the paste, and confirming the fan spins properly, usually done at the counter the same visit, in front of you. It is only when a good clean and a healthy fan still do not bring the temperature down that the fault has likely moved to the graphics chip or the board itself, and that part of the job goes to the bench, with a fixed quote before it starts.
Why a MacBook overheats
Dust blocked in the fans
Years of normal use pull dust into the fan blades and heat sink fins, and once airflow is restricted the fan has to spin faster and longer to move the same amount of air, which is usually the first thing you notice as constant fan noise. A build-up like this is a straightforward clean, not a repair, and it's the first thing we check.
Thermal paste dried out
The paste between the processor and its heat sink loses its ability to transfer heat as it ages, typically after a few years, and a Mac that runs hotter and louder than it used to, without any change in how you use it, often points here rather than to dust alone. We reapply fresh paste as part of the same cleaning visit where it's needed.
A fan that is failing
A fan with worn bearings makes a rattling, grinding or uneven pitch rather than a smooth rush of air, and it may not spin up to full speed even when the Mac needs it to. A failing fan cannot cool the Mac properly no matter how clean the rest of the inside is, and it is replaced on its own rather than as part of a general clean.
Swollen battery pressing the board
A battery that has begun to swell can lift the trackpad from underneath and press up against the logic board and the fan housing above it, which restricts airflow and can add heat of its own. If the trackpad has started to click unevenly or the case no longer sits flat, stop charging it and see battery replacement before anything else, since a swollen cell is also a safety issue.
A runaway process in macOS
A single app or background process stuck in a loop can push the processor to its limit continuously, which the fans respond to exactly as they would for a genuine hardware fault: full speed, sustained, for as long as the process keeps running. Activity Monitor's CPU tab usually shows it immediately; if quitting the process doesn't calm things down, a macOS repair resets the software side of things.
Vents blocked by a case or a soft surface
A case that covers the vents, or using the Mac on a bed, cushion or your lap for long stretches, blocks the airflow the fans are trying to pull through, and no amount of internal cleaning fixes a Mac that is still sitting on a blocked surface. It's a free thing to rule out before booking anything.
GPU or board fault
Where cleaning, fresh paste and a working fan do not bring the temperature down, the fault has usually moved to the graphics chip or the power circuitry on the logic board itself, which can run hot as it starts to fail even before it causes any other symptom. Charging while already hot
Charging adds its own heat on top of whatever the Mac is already generating, and a MacBook that runs hot under load and is also plugged in runs hotter still, which is normal to a point but worth mentioning if the machine feels genuinely too hot to hold. If it also throttles or shuts down specifically while charging under load, tell us; it helps narrow down whether the fault is thermal or in the charging circuit itself.
What we check first
Before anything is opened, we ask what the Mac was doing when it got hot: exporting video, running an update, sitting idle, or just generally warmer than it used to be doing the same everyday tasks. Idle heat and heat under heavy load point in different directions, and it saves time to know which one you're dealing with before we start.
We check Activity Monitor for a process stuck running flat out, confirm the vents are not physically blocked by a case or a soft surface, and only then open the case to look at the fans, the heat sink and the paste underneath. This is free, and it tells us whether cleaning will actually fix it before we quote for anything.
Fans, paste and dust
Cleaning means removing the fans, clearing the dust from the blades and the heat sink fins with compressed air and a brush, and wiping down the intake and exhaust vents so air can actually move through the machine again. Where the paste has dried out, we clean off the old layer completely and apply a fresh one rather than adding more on top of what's already there.
This happens at our Ampang counter while you wait, since it doesn't require the board to come out of the machine; if the fan itself has failed, a replacement is quoted after the free diagnosis. It's only when cleaning and a good fan do not solve it that we move to board work on the bench, and we always tell you before that happens rather than assume.
When heat means a board fault
A logic board or graphics chip starting to fail can run hot well before it causes a crash or a black screen, since a failing component often draws more current, and therefore generates more heat, than a healthy one doing the same job. We scan the board with a thermal camera to pinpoint the one spot running warmer than everything around it, and that spot is almost always where the fault turns out to be.
From there it is the same process as any other board fault: traced against Apple's schematics, repaired at component level under the microscope where possible, from RM500.
