A MacBook keyboard is not a part you can lift out on its own on most modern models: since 2016 Apple has built the keyboard, trackpad, speakers and, on many models, the battery into a single top case assembly, so a handful of dead keys can mean more than replacing the keys themselves. iPRO Ampang is an Apple Certified Independent Repair Provider in Taman Dagang, Ampang, and we diagnose first so you know exactly what you are paying for before any part comes out.
Single keycaps and their mechanisms are often repairable without a full top case, and that is always our first option when the parts programme allows it. Where the top case itself has to go, we stock the common MacBook Air and 13-inch Pro assemblies, so most keyboard jobs are done the same day. MacBook keyboard problems we fix
Sticky or repeating keys
A single key that types twice, feels stiff, or needs a hard press to register is almost always dust or a spilled drink under that one keycap, not a fault with the whole keyboard. We clean and test the individual mechanism first before quoting for anything bigger.
Keys that do nothing
One or two dead keys point to a broken mechanism under the keycap. Dead keys scattered across the whole board, or a whole row gone at once, usually mean the keyboard's flex cable or the top case itself has failed.
Butterfly keyboard (2015–2019)
The single-generation butterfly mechanism used on MacBook and MacBook Pro models from 2015 to 2019 fails more often than the scissor keyboards before and after it, usually from a speck of dust under one key rather than heavy use. We replace the top case with the later, more reliable Magic Keyboard mechanism where the chassis allows it.
Backlight dead
Keys still type normally but do not light up in the dark, either across the whole board or in patches. This is a backlight cable or connector fault under the keyboard, separate from the key mechanisms, and does not always need a full top case to fix.
Trackpad clicks but cursor dead, or Force Touch gone
A trackpad that still gives the click sensation but will not move the cursor, or has lost the pressure-sensitive Force Touch feedback entirely, points to the trackpad cable or actuator rather than the keys. We test it separately, since keyboard and trackpad share the same top case on most models.
Liquid under the keys
A spill that reaches the keys is rarely just a keyboard problem: liquid runs down through the mechanisms onto the logic board underneath. We strip the machine down and check for corrosion before touching the keyboard itself; see liquid damage repair for what that involves.
Top case cracked or warped
A dropped or twisted MacBook can crack the aluminium top case around the keyboard, or leave the deck no longer sitting flat, even if every key still works. A cracked case is replaced as a whole assembly along with the keyboard inside it.
Missing keycaps
A single popped-off keycap can sometimes be clipped back onto its mechanism without replacing anything, provided the small plastic retainer under it is not broken. If the retainer has snapped, that one key's mechanism needs replacing, not the whole keyboard.
Single key, whole keyboard or top case: what you actually need
Not every keyboard fault means a new top case. A single sticky or dead key is often just that one mechanism and its keycap, a job that takes minutes and costs far less than a full assembly. We open with the free diagnosis specifically to tell these two apart before we quote anything.
Where several keys are affected, the flex cable has failed, or the fault is on a model where Apple does not sell individual key mechanisms, the whole top case is the only fix: it carries the keyboard, trackpad, speakers, and on many models the battery, all riveted together as one part. That is Apple's design, not ours, and it is why a top case job costs more than a single key.
Butterfly versus Magic Keyboard
MacBook and MacBook Pro models from 2015 to 2019 used Apple's butterfly key mechanism, a thinner design that felt different to type on but trapped dust and crumbs under the keys far more easily than the scissor mechanisms used before and after it. A single grain of sand under one key was often enough to make it stick or stop working.
From 2019 onward Apple returned to a scissor mechanism under the Magic Keyboard name, which is markedly more reliable and is what we fit when we replace a butterfly-era top case, on the models where the chassis and connector allow it.
