Intel Air or Apple Silicon Air: what changes for repair
On 2012 to 2017 Airs the SSD is a removable module, so a dead Mac still gives up its data and an upgrade to 1 TB or 2 TB is a one-to-two-hour job with your data migrated across. From 2018 the storage is soldered to the logic board, which means data recovery goes through board repair first and storage upgrades are not possible. Batteries, displays, keyboards and ports are replaceable on every generation.
Apple Silicon Airs (M1 to M4) have no fan and a single large logic board. Liquid that gets past the keyboard reaches the board quickly, so a spill should come in the same day. The good news is that these boards repair well under the microscope; most no-power M1 and M2 Airs we see leave working.
