Service Recommended battery warning
macOS flags an ageing cell under Battery in System Settings once it can no longer hold its original capacity. The warning is a starting point, not a diagnosis: we check cycle count, swelling and charging behaviour before we quote, since a healthy-looking cell can still fail early.
Swollen battery lifting the trackpad
A battery that swells pushes the trackpad up from underneath until it stops clicking evenly, or the bottom case bulges and rocks on the desk. This is a safety issue, not just a nuisance: stop charging it and bring it in rather than keep using a swollen cell.
Drains in a couple of hours
A MacBook that used to last most of a working day and now goes flat in under two hours almost always needs a new cell. We check the drain rate against the machine's own charge history before confirming it is the battery and not a runaway background process.
Shuts down with charge still showing
The menu bar battery icon still shows charge left, then the Mac powers off without warning and will not turn back on until it is plugged in. This is the cell's voltage sagging under load faster than macOS can track it, a classic sign the battery needs replacing.
Battery health warning after a few years
Every MacBook battery is rated for a fixed number of charge cycles before its capacity drops off noticeably. Past that point, Apple's own health indicator moves from Normal toward Service Recommended even with careful use. We read the actual cycle count and the cell's condition rather than go on the warning alone.
Only works when plugged in
If the Mac only turns on or stays on while connected to the charger, and dies the moment you unplug it, the battery is no longer holding any usable charge. On a small number of Macs the same symptom points to the charging circuit instead: see charging port repair if the battery itself tests fine.
Mac runs hot and fan spins on battery
A weakening cell cannot deliver power smoothly under load, so the processor throttles and the fan spins harder than it should, even for ordinary tasks. Swap the battery and the heat and fan noise usually settle back to normal on their own.
Battery not detected (X icon)
An X over the battery icon in the menu bar usually means the logic board cannot read the battery at all, not that the cell itself is dead. We check the battery connector and the board's power management circuit first; if the board is at fault, see logic board repair.
Original-grade cells, swapped safely
We fit original-grade lithium-polymer cells built to the same capacity and voltage as the part Apple used in your model, tested on the bench before they go anywhere near your Mac. A lithium battery under physical stress is the one part of a MacBook that can genuinely catch fire if handled carelessly, so every removal is done with the machine powered off, insulated tools and the cell supported the whole way out, never levered or bent.
Genuine Apple batteries through the IRP parts programme are available on request at a higher price if you want an Apple-sourced part specifically. Either way, the new battery is calibrated and tested at the counter before you leave, and the price is confirmed before we open the case.
Glued batteries on Retina and Apple Silicon Macs
Since the first Retina MacBook Pro, Apple has glued the battery cells to the top case with strong adhesive strips instead of screwing them in, and Apple Silicon Macs continue the same design. Getting the old cell out cleanly means releasing that adhesive with the right solvent and gentle, even heat, not prying, because a punctured or bent lithium cell is a genuine hazard.
New stretch-release adhesive strips go down under the replacement battery so it sits exactly as tight as the original, with no rattling and no risk of the cell shifting under the trackpad. This is the main reason a battery swap on these models takes a little longer than the same job on an older MacBook with a screwed-in battery, and why we do it under a loupe at the counter rather than rush it.
What we check after the swap
Before we hand the Mac back we confirm the new cell reports a fresh cycle count from zero rather than the number carried over from the old battery, and we give you calibration advice: run it down close to empty and fully charge it once in the first week so macOS learns the new battery's real capacity. On glued models we also check that the trackpad clicks evenly across its whole surface, since a battery that is not seated flat is the most common cause of an uneven click after a swap. Finally we run the Mac under load for several minutes and do a full boot to confirm there is no throttling, no unexpected shutdown and nothing feels warm where it should not.
